The lessons for the next week or two with the first and second graders will incorporate the Red Clover Book Me... Jane, by Patrick McDonnell and will ask students to extract from the text examples of how the author showed us that Jane was an animal lover. We will use a program called KidSpiration which will offer an alternative to paper graphic organizers and additionally, takes their work and moves it into outline format.

I have found that when teaching note taking, an organizer such as this reinforces students to only use keywords, and puts their work into outline, thus allowing them to focus on their understanding of the concepts, rather than risk that they are simply copying ideas verbatim from the text.
