Flexible Scheduling

Flexible Scheduling
  • is an opportunity that allows teachers the freedom to send students at will or bring their classes to the library
  • is designed to be an extension of classroom
  • is management (v. delivery) centered… I plan, coordinate, and coach the instruction… teachers plan and manage learning and assessment for students

  • involves scheduling time for the space and/or the time with the SLMS

Roles for Browsing Time

During Browsing:

  • My role:
    • to support, as I am able, the choices students make for pleasure and instructional reading. I know the collection very well, and can often make informed suggestions.
    • to organize the collection so that students are best able to find what they are looking for.
    • to create systems and train staff to facilitate the ease of use in the space
      • half time assistant who can usually cover for me when I am out of the room
      • will teach anyone who asks how to use the computer for checkout
      • the clipboard functions in the absence of either
    • to minimize distractions for browsing students (especially if there are multiple activities happening simultaneously)

  • Teacher's role: to provide access, supervision, and support to students in choosing reading material

First and Second grade Chapter Books

In talking with teachers, parents and administrators, I have revised my "You may take out as many as you need" policy. In the past if a student wanted 2 or more chapter books, I have allowed it as long as there were some in his/her pile that the child could read.
I am now encouraging only one chapter book.

And they're off!

We have launched in to a new year with grand enthusiasm!
There are a few changes in the space-- I bought some new carts to house the more crowded sections as we settle into the newly reorganized collection. They are a beautiful library blue!
